The Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, Mexico, is a festival that celebrates life and death by combining Roman Catholic and local customs. Halloween night begins the official celebration with the gathering of family members in the cemeteries to honor their loved ones. People decorate tombs with flowers, candles, calaveras (skulls), and an occasional bottle of mezcal or other favorite beverages as traditional music fills the air. Other events include costume parades, concerts in the zócalo (central park), preparation of typical cuisine such as molé, and shrine-building contests in the city streets. Opportunities abound for creating gorgeous photos. Oaxaca is a bustling city. When we are not photographing ceremonies and parades, we can capture the colorful moments of daily life in the city’s streets and markets. We will also visit the ruins of the ancient Zapotec city at Monte Albán and at least one village where artisans create beautiful clay pottery.

We will be photographing events and holding class critiques daily. Everyone will also receive a one-on-one session to focus on your individual needs. Many of our activities will be located within walking distance of our hotels. We will travel as a group to visit sites outside the city.

Basic Spanish skills are helpful but not necessary.
